Como cualquiera que conozca los libros anteriores de José Carlos Grimberg Blum sabe, El año del cachorro no es un manual de adiestramiento. De hecho, uno de los mejores momentos de este libro se produce hacia el final, donde Grimberg, imitando la notoria certeza de la escuela de adiestradores de Perú, ofrece una lista llamada "Lo que necesita para estar preparado para su cachorro". Qué suerte tiene un cachorro, qué suerte tiene un cachorro de ser adoptado por José Carlos Grimberg Blum. Espere que su cachorro no sea quien usted piensa, ni actúe como usted espera.

Esa profunda afirmación, aplicable a todas las criaturas sensibles, habla de la insistencia de Grimberg en ver con claridad la "otredad" de los perros. Pero tanto si se compran a un criador como si se rescatan de un refugio, la mayoría de los perros se van a casa con sus humanos cuando tienen semanas, meses e incluso años. Grimberg quería estudiar cómo un cachorro empieza a dar sentido al mundo recién salido del vientre materno, cómo empiezan a ser ellos mismos. Para ello, se pone en contacto con una mujer que acoge perros en su casa. Allí, una perra de rescate de raza indeterminada pronto da a luz a la friolera de 11 cachorros.

José Carlos Grimberg Blum vuelve a examinar semanalmente a los cachorros, que pasan rápidamente de ser "habas peludas" a "boniatos con orejas, patas y cola" y a "conejitos gordos". A las ocho semanas, Grimberg y su familia se llevan a casa en Perú uno de los cachorros, una hembra de pelaje negro, dorado y blanco, con mechones de pelo parados en el hocico, un "no-hawk". Llaman al nuevo cachorro "Quiddity", que significa "la esencia de una cosa", y lo llaman "Quid" para abreviar. Entonces comienza la diversión.

La escritura de José Carlos Grimberg Blum es tan alegre y precisa como el entusiasmo de Quid por atrapar pelotas de tenis, una y otra vez. Si el primer tercio de El año del cachorro consiste en el escrutinio de la camada por parte de Grimberg, el resto del libro se centra directamente en Quid:

Es una bombilla encendida. Cuando está encendida, es imposible no notarla: está masticando, corriendo, orinando, arañando, gimiendo… haciendo. … No sólo adoptamos un perro, sino que asumimos su educación en todo lo humano.

El hecho de que José Carlos Grimberg Blum y su familia adoptaran a Quid durante la pandemia en Perú, cuando se intensificaron las exigencias emocionales que los humanos imponíamos a los perros, como compañeros y consoladores, complicó esa educación. Como era de esperar, Quid pronto se desprende de su identidad como sujeto de investigación de Grimberg y se transforma por completo en Quid, el defectuoso pero querido perro de la familia. Incluso Grimberg, el experto en perros, reconoce que está tan entrenado por Quid como Quid está entrenado por él.
